Terms of Intervention

Each chair enables one eminent foreign scientist to be hosted full-time for 12 months (which may be spread over 2 years) in one or more of the Île-de-France region’s higher education or research institutions. This stay is based on a scientific project and teaching program.

The Île-de-France region provides €190,000 of funding per chair. This money covers the cost of the researcher’s pay, as well as resources needed to carry out the project (assistants, incidental expenses, conference-attendance costs, installation expenses, etc.), but excluding equipment (cf. application’s financial statement).

After the selection panel has chosen the recipients of these chairs, the terms of funding are established and specified on an individual basis by the Fondation de l’École Normale Supérieure (FENS) – which is the scheme’s administrative body – and by the chair-holder’s host institution. In particular, this agreement lays down the terms and conditions of the researcher’s pay and for justifying any expenses incurred.

The Île-de-France region is pro-actively facilitating young people’s access to the labor market via its ‘100,000 internships for young people in the Île-de-France region’ measure, adopted in 2016. As a result of this measure, a host institution receiving regional funding for a chair will have to recruit an intern for at least 2 months.

Chair-Holders’ Obligations

As part of a teaching program including at least ten lectures, chair-holders must give at least one seminar for students and young researchers in the Île-de-France region, as well as a public talk presenting research carried out as part of their stay in the region. They must also produce an end-of-stay report. Depending on their availability, chair-holders are invited to attend meetings for PhD students and students organized by the region.
